Your Household Water Quality: Odors in Your Water

Are you experiencing unpleasant odors in your household water? While the water is likely not dangerous, we have some great information to help make it easier for you to locate the source of your smelly water (CAES):

Locating the Source of the Odor (4 potential scenarios)

1. Odor can be found in all of your water faucets – the problem is probably in the main water supply.

2. Odor is occurring in only certain faucets – the problem is likely in the fixtures or pipes supplying those specific faucets.

3. The problem goes away after running the water for a few minutes – the problem is somewhere in the household plumbing system.

4. The odor is persistent – the problem could be the water source or a combination of both the water source and the plumbing system.

No matter where the smelly water is coming from, reasons for it range anywhere from too much chlorine to bacteria growing in your drain. If it smells like bleach, it is probably due to high chlorine levels, while a rotten egg smell would indicate bacterial growth.
