Clogged shower drains are a common problem in bathrooms. They slow down the flow of water in your bathroom and your daily routine if left unfixed. It’s important to take steps to prevent clogs, but first we need to know what causes them. So how do shower drain clogs form?
Below are 3 of the most common causes of drain clogging:
Hair. Hair shedding is inevitable in the shower. Long strands gather and stick to the sides of your drain pipe, forming a net-like structure which catches other objects passing by. Slowly, but then all at once, your drain is completely clogged. To combat the frequent problem, purchase a hair trap that fits easily over an open drain pipe and allows water to pass through. This will catch the hair and stop it from sliding down your drain.
Soap Scum. Unless you use body wash, soap usage is hard to avoid. You may think soap scum dissolves easily, but realistically it be very harmful to your shower drain – turning solid and attracting debris passing through.Soap scum can be a tricky problem to solve, but you can help by making a conscious effort to not drain soap purposely, even small amounts.
Hard Water Deposits. Hard water contains a high amount of tiny mineral deposits and is especially damaging to your drain. The solid materials in it can latch to the drain walls and catch other small materials passing through, causing clogs. Luckily you can convert hard water to soft and safe water with a water softener.
