How To Declutter Your Home and Relieve Stress

It doesn’t matter what the reason is for it – sometimes we just can’t help but have clutter around the house. However, did you know that clutter has been proven to have a direct effect on our mood and self-esteem? If you’ve been feeling down lately and can’t seem to figure out why, take a look around your home – have things been piling up recently? If so, we have a few things you can do to lift your spirits up thanks to HouseLogic.

1. Rely on five.

It can definitely be overwhelming to have to find a place for everything all at once, but you can make it easier on yourself by focusing on “five” – each time you get up, put just five things away. Or, you can try dedicating just five minutes every hour to cleaning things up. Either way, don’t feel like you have to declutter everything all at once – it’s fine to start off small!

2. Test yourself.

A lot of us have trouble throwing things away because we think we’ll miss them later on. But, we bet you also have a lot of stuff at home that you wouldn’t even realize you were missing! To figure out which items are an absolute must-keep and which items are okay to toss, grab a box and start filling it with items you don’t use. Then, store it away for a few weeks, a few months, or maybe even a year – if you don’t reach for it once, it’s safe to get rid of those items.

3. Focus on the fridge.

HouseLogic explains that researchers have found a correlation between the amount of clutter found in a home and the number of items on the fridge. So, if you’re looking for a place to start, start with your refrigerator door and eliminate old magnets, menus, thank you cards, and more that you can live without seeing every day.

4. Understand the power of photo albums.

It’s one thing to have a few frames strategically placed on coffee tables and shelves, but having the entire surface filled makes it much harder to keep things organized. To solve this problem, grab a photo album or two and start filling them with pictures that you want to keep, but that you don’t necessarily need to have in front of you all the time.

5. Be strict about the sink.

Having a clean sink and a clean kitchen is one of the best ways to relieve stress that comes from clutter. If you have a dishwasher, don’t leave the kitchen until all dishes have been put in it after eating. If you don’t, don’t leave until you’ve washed them by hand and put them away! It may add a few extra minutes to your post-meal cleanup, but it’ll be worth it in the long run. Especially with busy schedules we know how difficult it can be to keep on top of cleaning, but when you dedicate yourself to doing these five things, we bet you’ll be feeling the best you’ve felt in a while!
