What’s the first thing you would do if you noticed you had a clogged drain? If you answered with “go to the store to buy a drain cleaner,” you aren’t alone – a lot of people rely on store bought liquid drain cleaners to assist with clogged drains.
However, as your trusted plumber, we feel you should know that liquid drain cleaners aren’t ideal, and in fact, they can actually do more harm than good – keep reading to see what we mean.
Drain cleaners can damage pipes.
Although drain cleaners are made with chemicals that are meant to do exactly that – clean drains – those chemicals can be pretty harsh on your plumbing system. As they have a chance to sit on your pipes they’ll start to eat away at them, which leaves you with a second problem to address.
The chemicals are toxic.
Not only are the chemicals in drain cleaners not good for your own health, but the environment isn’t a fan of them either. Even after you pour drain cleaner down your drain the chemicals will continue to linger in the air you breathe, and when the bottle is empty and you throw it out, any ounce of leftovers inside wind up in landfills or even our water.
Aside from the fact that drain cleaners can cause further problems and potentially get in the way of your health, let’s not forget to mention that they might not even work! Liquid drain cleaners are known to be hit or miss, and if they do work, your problem is likely only going to be solved temporarily.
All that said, we at Barker and Sons Plumbing & Rooter encourage you to leave all of your drain cleaning needs to us! As experts in our field we know which solutions are safe and which are not, and we always encourage the use of the right products – for example, BioOne (this particular product contains no chemicals and meets the EPA’s Safer Choice standard).
