4 Warning Signs That You Need a New Water Heater

Water heaters are essential, but even so, most people don’t pay too much attention to it until something goes wrong – or worse, until it’s too late. But since having a water heater fail on you could leave you out in the cold (literally), it’s important to pay close attention to any warning signs that suggest it’s on its way out. Below, take a look at some of the most obvious:

  1. Your water is rusty. If you start to notice that your water is rusty, and specifically your hot water, it could mean that the interior of your water heater is starting to rust away. While it could just be your pipes that are rusty, it’s important to have your water heater looked at anyway, as a leak may form if it really is the heater itself that’s causing a problem.
  2. Your water heater is noisy. For the most part your water heater should be relatively quiet, so hearing any kind of noise should be enough for you to look into it. As your water heater starts to get older some sediment will begin to build up at the very bottom of the tank, and as that sediment is heated and then later reheated, it begins to harden – this is usually a reason why you’ll hear banging sounds. When this occurs, it’s a pretty good indication that your water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan.
  3. There’s water around the water heater. Water should be in your water heater, not around it where you can easily see it. If you are starting to notice some moisture or perhaps a puddle or two near the base of your water heater, chances are you have a leak or some other type of damage that’s causing water to escape.
  4. The water is too hot or not hot enough. Your water heater has a specific purpose, and when it stops being able to fulfill its duties, it’s a pretty good sign that either repairs or total replacement is needed. While most people view water being not hot enough as the only sign of a problem, know that water that is too hot could also indicate something suspicious.
