What Happens When You Find a Leak?

It’s 2 a.m. — you just took a mid-night trip to the bathroom and were greeted by wet feet and a small puddle around the base of your toilet. What now?

Before you panic, find comfort in knowing that you’re not the only one. Like most other home maintenance problems, plumbing leaks typically pop up when we least expect them, and in the most inopportune moments. Fortunately, we’re here to tell you exactly what to do in those moments, so you can get your leaking pipes or toilet on the road to recovery quickly, and more importantly, so you can get back to bed!

Step #1: Identify the issue.

The first thing you’ll want to do is inspect the mysterious puddle to try to figure out where that leak may be coming from. This will help you better explain the issue to the pros when you place that emergency call.

Step #2: Shut off the water.

It seems obvious, but in the moment it can be easy to forget about that handy, dandy shutoff valve. If the source of the leak is clear — ie: from a cracked toilet tank, a detectable pipe under the sink, etc. — you can just shut off water to that specific fixture. However, if the source isn’t clear, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Step #3: Soak up the spillage.

Don’t leave water lying around! Not only is it a slippery safety hazard, but it can cause mold, mildew and deterioration, even if only left for a few hours. They don’t call water “nature’s most destructive force” for nothin’!
