For those of you with the luxury of having a garbage disposal at home, then we’re sure you know just how convenient they can be. After all, they are another way to help you dispose of unwanted food scraps and waste, and they minimize how much of your trash you actually see in your kitchen on a day-to-day basis. But just like anything else in your home, your garbage disposal needs the proper care, and if you go too long without providing it, you’ll be able to tell pretty quickly when unpleasant odors start taking over your air.
For tips on how to clean your garbage disposal the right way, keep reading below:
- Create a solution from a half cup of baking soda and one cup of white vinegar and send that down the disposal. If you hear some noise, don’t worry – it’s just the products working together!
- After a few minutes of letting the baking soda/vinegar solution clean things out, pour some boiling water down the drain.
- Next, fill a cup with ice cubes and pour a cup of salt on top of them. Then, drop them into the garbage disposal and turn it on. This too will make quite a bit of noise, but the crunching of the ice is actually cleaning your blades, not destroying them!
- Lastly, allow some cold water to run down your garbage disposal and add some lemon juice or lemon wedges to the drain – this will help things start to smell fresh once again.
Although some of us view chores as tasks that we’d like to put off for as long as we can, cleaning your garbage disposal doesn’t have to be like that – since it’s relatively simple, we bet you can turn this into a part of your usual cleaning routine.
