Top Tips to Maintain Your Garbage Disposal

If using your garbage disposal often is wrong, we don’t want to be right. Fortunately, there’s nothing wrong with leaning on your trusty garbage disposal time and again, as long as you’re treating it kindly and maintaining it often. Here’s what you need to know to do both.

Run it every day.

See – we told you using it often wasn’t wrong, in fact, it’s actually right! Whether you’re putting food down there each day or not, it’s important to flip it on regularly and run the water to prevent rust and corrosion from setting in.

Stay cool.

No, you don’t have to be rocking the latest fashion trends while hitting that switch, but make sure you’re using only cold water at all times. Hot water can melt the food particles, making them harder to grind and more likely to get stuck in your disposal later on.

Give it time.

Grinding up food particles to perfection takes time. When you use your disposal, keep the water running for at least a minute after grinding has finish. This will ensure all the food has been flushed away.

Avoid an overload.

Cut your food up into smaller pieces and feed them into the disposal slowly to avoid clogging and damage. Remember to keep these problem causing food away from your disposal as well: grease or oil; potato peels; glass, plastic, metal or paper; bones, seeds or pits; pasta and rice.
