4 Steps to Avoid Plumbing Problems This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is meant to be a day filled with lots of love and laughter while you’re surrounded by great friends and family — not a day that you spend stressing over home-related issues. And since many people look forward to Thanksgiving all 364 other days of the year, we know just how disappointing it would be for a plumbing disaster to interrupt your holiday festivities.

With that said, we want you to be able to focus on the fun this Thanksgiving, so below, we’re offering a few tips to help you avoid a plumbing problem this year:

Step 1: Don’t over-stuff your garbage disposal.

Even though you may have more waste on Thanksgiving, treat your garbage disposal the same way you do every other day of the year. That means, don’t over-stuff it with pieces of turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. Make sure you aren’t using it to dispose of potato skins, bone fragments, eggshells, fats/grease, fruit pits and seeds, or stringy vegetables, too. These are always garbage disposal no-nos!

Step 2: Put garbage cans in each bathroom.

To keep your guests from flushing anything other than toilet paper, make sure you have garbage cans accessible in each bathroom. And unless you want to deal with a clogged toilet, you should also give guests a friendly reminder to actually use the garbage cans you put out.

Step 3: Spread out showers.

For those of you who are having guests stay with you for the weekend, it would be smart to spread out your showers so that your plumbing isn’t overworked. Keeping 15 minutes between showers is a good start, but the longer you can wait, the better. This gives your drains time to clear out, and it also helps with making sure there is enough hot water for everyone!

Step 4: Remember to remain alert!

Most importantly, you’ll want to keep an eye on your plumbing so that if something starts to act up, you can nip it in the bud right away. For example, if you’re having guests over and after a few showers the drain starts to slow down, it could be because too much hair has already started to build up. You’ll want to clean it out before it gets worse.
