Why You Should Never Ignore a Leaky Faucet

You start your morning routine the same way you do every morning in your Fountain Valley home: Get out of bed, wash your face, and brush your teeth. However, you notice the sink drain is SLOW, and the faucet keeps dripping, no matter how you adjust the handle.

Now that you think about it, it’s been doing this for a few weeks, but today is the first time it’s been this slow. You make a mental note to call the plumber, but then your kid calls for you, and the thought slips your mind. By the time you remember it, it’s bedtime. Surely, everything will be okay until tomorrow. You turn the handle just a little too hard, and now water is spraying everywhere.

If this sounds more like something from a sitcom than real life, we’re going to share a real story from one of our customers that perfectly explains why you should never ignore a leaky faucet.

Small Leaks are Signs of Larger Issues

One of our customers noticed her bathroom sink wasn’t draining and asked her husband to call the plumber. He was in the middle of shaving and growing frustrated with how hard it was to shave with how full the sink was.

In a moment of frustration, he flipped the handle to try and finish shaving. Unfortunately, the handle broke, and water sprayed directly to the ceiling. Talk about a rough morning.

The husband smartly and immediately went to shut off the water using the main shut-off valve, but the handle was calcified. He still tried to turn it; after all, when there’s water spraying all over your bathroom, turning the water off should always be the top priority. But he broke that, too!

Now, they were in a real pickle. They had water spraying in their bathroom with no way to turn it off. Fortunately, they called us, and we went to them right away to get everything cleaned and fixed. We were happy to help them out of their disaster and spent the afternoon rebuilding everything, replacing valves, and clearing their drain stoppage.

This story has a happy ending, even though it was more painful, expensive, and time-consuming than if they had called at the first sign of a slow drain.

Preventative Care is the Way to Go

Fixing a plumbing problem when it’s small before it turns into a big problem, like your home flooding, is always the best plan. A leaky faucet or a slow-draining sink can indicate that there is a deeper problem. Scheduling regular inspections can help you spot issues you didn’t even know to look for… like calcification on the water shut-off valve.

Preventative upgrades can also give you peace of mind that in an emergency, your water will be shut off to minimize any damage before the leak can be repaired.

An automatic water shut-off valve is an excellent device that is installed on your main water line and monitors your water usage. It can detect leaks as small as a dime and even has the ability to immediately shut off your water if you get a leak.
