Plumbing Safety Tips For You and Your Family

It’s time to talk about safety! Being that your plumbing is a very complex system with many moving parts, it’s important to stay well informed about how it works and the proper way to care for it as a homeowner. Then, once you know how to care for it, it’s important to figure out how to do so safely! Although it may seem pretty simple, just like anything else, there are safety risks in dealing with plumbing – even for professionals! That’s why it’s so important to stay up-to-date on the latest safety tips; here are a few we at Barker and Sons Plumbing & Rooter want you to be aware of:

Always protect your eyes: Whether you are repairing a small leak DIY style or are taking on a bigger challenge, always wear the proper protective gear. For your eyes, that means safety glasses. Especially since you may be looking up towards your pipes (for leaks, for example), there is always the chance that something will fall down towards you.

Work with a buddy: While yes, you may be able to complete a job on your own, it’s always best to have a buddy by your side so that they can look out for you. By having a spotter near by, you can rest assured that someone will be there to help in case an emergency should arise.

Use a tool belt to carry your supplies: Even when they are small, never carry your tools in your pocket. Instead, wear a tool belt around your waist! Not only does this allow for easy access to the tools you need, but it also reduces the risk of being injured by a tool if it were to get caught on your pants.

Be aware of gas: When working with your plumbing, it is critical that you have a heightened sense of awareness for the smell of gas. If you smell gas or believe that a gas leak has formed, stop work immediately and contact a professional right away. Here at Barker and Sons, we can find your gas leak and repair it in no time!

That all being said, when it comes to the rest of your family, we hope you’ll remind everyone not assisting with the job to steer clear of the scene so that there is no chance of injury. But if they should remain close, have them wear protective clothing, be aware of gas and handle tools properly too!
