How Can I Fix That Stinky Sewer Smell?

Let’s face it, sometimes plumbing isn’t so pleasant. Luckily though, there are a few things you can do to try to ease those stinky smells and unkind odors that can sometimes radiate from your sink and shower drains.

Run the water every so often.

If you have a guest bathroom or seldom-used sink, standing water in your P-trap might be the culprit. The longer it has time to sit, the more likely the water in the trap is to evaporate and let sewer gases up and into your home. Running the water at least twice a month should do the trick!

Caulk around your fixtures.

Sometimes the stinky smells aren’t caused by the sewer at all, but by trapped water and bacterial growth. Sealing the base of your toilet with caulk can help prevent water from seeping under and hosting stinky bacteria. The same holds true for your shower doors!

Deep clean everything!

Your sink, tub, and drains might be the most obvious areas to tack onto your cleaning list, but what about overflow drains, garbage disposal splash guards and the like? Don’t forget to scrub out those sneaky places where odor-causing bacteria and buildup can often be hiding.

Have your drains flushed.

Drain cleaning is not only important in the event of a clog, but also in keeping things clear of debris in the first place! If it’s been awhile since you’ve had your plumbing inspected and your pipes cleaned, you may want to give your local plumber a call.
