Three Tips On How To Prevent Clogged Drains

As much as you may try, there are just some plumbing problems that are difficult to avoid. The good news? Clogged drains aren’t one of them! Since your shower, tub and sinks are probably some of the most commonly used fixtures in your home each day, it’s important that you have the know-how to keep them in good working order. Below, we’re sharing a few of our favorite tips on how to prevent clogged drains so that you can save yourself a headache!

Be Aware

The easiest way to prevent a clogged drain is to be aware of what and how much you put down them. For example, you’ve probably heard that you should never pour grease down the drain – listen to this! When it all comes down to it you really shouldn’t let anything other than the water from your faucets go down the drain, but be especially careful about not letting grease, coffee grounds or your hair wind up in your pipes.

Use Drain Strainers

When you aren’t able to stop certain things from going down the drain, let a drain strainer help you out! These are especially helpful because they catch things like soap scum and hair before it has a chance to mess with your plumbing. Just remember to clean them out regularly so that they can continue to do their job!

Run Hot Water

Even when you are as careful as can be, it’s not unusual for your pipes to experience some build ups. So, allow hot, or even boiling, water to run down the drain at least once a week to clean out soap scum, calcium or other deposits that may eventually form a clog. If you want to be even more proactive, consider running hot water for a bit after every use of your sinks or showers.

Even though it may require a bit of extra work on your part, by making a commitment to your plumbing, you can save yourself tons of time and money in the long run! But of course, should you experience a clogged drain in your Orange County home, know that you can always trust Barker and Sons Plumbing & Rooter to provide you with a quick, yet efficient solution at an honest price.
